An EP (electrophysiology lab) study gives detailed information about a heart's rhythm. If abnormal heart rhythms are present (and the heart takes too long to recover from this) an automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) or a pacemaker is used to bring the rhythm under control. The ICD is used to treat abnormally fast heart rhythms, and the pacemaker is used to treat abnormally slow heart rhythms. EP studies are performed on an outpatient basis.
